3 Cinematic (Film-Like) LUTs for Any Footage (REC.709 Ready)

I use these LUTs when editing my own professional and personal video projects.

Included in this download there are 3 similar versions of the "CHATHAM" look.

  1. Chatham - Original
  2. Chatham - Clean
  3. Chatham - Desaturated

All three are based on the same visual identities found in the overall CHATHAM look. Making it very easy to use all three LUTs interchangeably within the same project to serve their unique purposes.

  1. The Original Version is the most stylized and heaviest look. It is the Original CHATHAM Look with my take on a Cinematic Film Like look. It has smooth rolled-off highlights with a slightly warm/green tint, clean shadows that are slightly crushed, and warm mid-tones to give the skin tones a soft glow. It has the most vibrant colors out of the three variations and is my personal favorite to use.
  2. The Clean Version is based on the same CHATHAM look but with some minor adjustments. It has clean highlights with minor color shifting along with the highlights being more lifted allowing the highlight regions to breathe more with a more linear approach, the shadows are still clean but with less fade allowing you to reach deeper blacks. I use this version whenever I want a cleaner less stylized look but still want to retain the vibrant and contrasty film-like image.
  3. The Desaturated Version is also based on the CHATHAM look but with less saturation. You'll notice when using this desaturated version that the image will look more rich in contrast while removing some of the saturation. Skin tones will go from a rich colour to a more silver "bleach bypass" look. I like using this one when I'm trying to mute my colours more but retain some of the contrast and soft roll-off that comes from the CHATHAM look.

What is a LUT?
A LUT, or "Look-Up Table," is a digital color grading tool used in filmmaking and video production. It acts as a set of instructions that transforms the colors and tones of video footage to achieve a specific purpose. These LUTs are creative LUTs with the purpose of achieving a cinematic film-like visual style and mood. LUTs are valuable for enhancing the overall look and feel of video content, making it more visually appealing and professional.

How do I Transform my footage to REC 709?
There are many ways to transform your footage to REC 709 and my preferred method is using DaVinci Resolve CST (Color Space Transform) Node. You can do this easily in the color tab in Davinci Resolve under the effects tab on the top right. Search "Color Space Transform" and add a Color Space Transform Node by dragging and dropping it on one of your nodes. In the Color Space Transform window, select your input color space and gamma, which should be the color space and gamma of your footage, and then, set the output color space to REC 709.

Here for example I am transforming from S-Log3 - Rec.709

NOTE: You'll notice that the CST (Color Space Transform) happens before the CHATHAM LUT. You can then do your adjustments before your CST or in between your CST + LUT. There are a lot of articles and videos of when to do which kind of adjustments and when to do them upstream and/or downstream so that you always work in a non-destructive way.
